Tech prices in Australia follow a calendar. Some of it is the big sales, and some of it is the product cycle: the week a new model launches is often the best week to buy the old one. Here's when each kind of product tends to be cheapest, and how to check that a sale price is actually a low price.

The Australian sales calendar

When What Good for
January Post-Christmas and back-to-school sales Laptops, tablets, headphones
Late January to March New Samsung Galaxy S phones arrive Last year's Galaxy S models
April to June New TV ranges land Last year's TVs, as stores clear them
June End of financial year (EOFY) sales TVs, laptops, appliances, cameras, anything for work
July Amazon Prime Day Amazon's own range, small electronics
September New iPhones and Apple Watches Previous iPhones and Apple Watches
November Click Frenzy, Black Friday, Cyber Monday Almost everything, especially TVs, headphones, consoles
26 December Boxing Day sales TVs, audio, cameras, clearance stock

Two of those deserve a closer look.

EOFY (June)

The end of the Australian financial year on 30 June is the country's own big sale. Stores clear stock before stocktake, and businesses and sole traders buying work equipment want it before the tax year closes. It's one of the best times for TVs, laptops and cameras.

Black Friday (late November)

Black Friday has become Australia's biggest shopping event. In 2026 it falls on Friday 27 November, with Cyber Monday on 30 November, and many stores start their "Black Friday" prices a week or more earlier. Our Black Friday tech guide tracks what's actually cheaper.

Product by product

  • TVs: new ranges arrive mid-year, so last year's models are cheapest from about April to June and again at Black Friday and Boxing Day. A last-generation OLED at a clearance price is often the best value in TVs.
  • Phones: a phone drops most in the months after its successor launches. September for iPhones, early in the year for Galaxy S. Check our best phones guide for what's good value today.
  • Laptops: back-to-school (January) and EOFY (June) are strong. New chips launch through the year, so last year's model at a discount is often the smart buy.
  • Consoles: discounts are rarer and smaller; bundles (a console plus a game) are where the value usually is, around Black Friday and Christmas.
  • Graphics cards and PC parts: prices follow launches and stock more than the calendar. When a new generation launches, last generation's cards can fall fast, or vanish.
  • Headphones: some of the deepest regular discounts in tech, especially at Black Friday, Prime Day and EOFY.

Is the sale price actually low?

A sale sticker tells you a price is lower than the store's "was" price. It doesn't tell you it's lower than usual, or lower than at the store next door. Before you buy:

  1. Check the price history. Every product page here charts the lowest price every day. If the "sale" price is what it cost all last month, it isn't a sale.
  2. Check the other stores. A 30% discount at one store can still be dearer than the regular price at another.
  3. Check the exact model. Sale events bring out special model numbers and bundles that are hard to compare.

Don't wait forever

If you need it now, the best time to buy is when the price is near its recent low. Our deals page lists products whose price today is genuinely lower than usual, checked against their own history: today's best deals.

How we work: every price in this guide is today's lowest in-stock price across the Australian stores we check, refreshed every morning, and the tables recalculate with it. Nobody pays to be included or to rank higher. Specs come from the stores' and makers' own listings. How Compare Empire works
