In a gaming laptop, the graphics card decides almost everything: how many frames you get, at what resolution, and most of the price. So the best way to shop is to pick the GPU your budget allows, then find the cheapest good laptop with it.

The cheapest gaming laptop with each GPU today

"Models" is how many laptops with that GPU are in stock at the stores we check. The price is the cheapest of them today; follow the link for every store's price.

Which GPU do you need?

  • RTX 5050 and 3050/4050: entry-level. Esports games and older titles at 1080p; newer games at medium settings.
  • RTX 5060: the sweet spot for 1080p gaming at high settings, and the most common GPU in mid-range gaming laptops.
  • RTX 5070 and 5070 Ti: for 1440p screens and high refresh rates.
  • RTX 5080 and 5090: high-end 1440p and 4K, at a high-end price, in heavy laptops.

Laptop GPUs are not the same as desktop cards with the same name: they run at lower power, and the same GPU can perform quite differently in two laptops depending on how much power the maker allows and how well the laptop cools. Reviews that test the exact model are worth reading.

What else matters

  • 16GB of memory minimum, 32GB for streaming or heavy multitasking. Check whether it can be upgraded.
  • The screen's refresh rate. 144Hz or higher makes fast games look smoother, if the GPU can keep up.
  • Cooling and noise. Thin gaming laptops run hot and loud. If you game at a desk, a thicker laptop is often faster and quieter.
  • Battery: gaming laptops game on mains power. Unplugged, expect a few hours of light use.

Laptop or desktop?

If you don't need to carry it, a desktop PC gives far more performance for the money and can be upgraded. See our gaming PC build guide for today's prices.

Where to buy

Gaming laptops are widely sold by both the big chains and the PC stores. See where to buy a laptop, and every model is on the laptops page.

How we work: every price in this guide is today's lowest in-stock price across the Australian stores we check, refreshed every morning, and the tables recalculate with it. Nobody pays to be included or to rank higher. Specs come from the stores' and makers' own listings. How Compare Empire works
