iPhone Duo in Australia: is Apple's first foldable worth $3,499?
Our take on the iPhone Duo after launch, its real Australian prices at every store, and whether to buy now, wait for stock, or get a Galaxy Z Fold8 instead.
In this guide
Apple finally made a foldable. The iPhone Duo (the phone most of us spent two years calling the "iPhone Fold") went on sale in Australia on 23 October 2026, starting at an RRP of $3,499 for 256GB and running to $5,899 for 2TB. That makes it the most expensive iPhone Apple has ever sold here, and around $800 more than Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold8.
So is it worth it? Our short answer: it's the best foldable for people who already live in Apple's world, but most people should wait. Here's why, with today's real prices.
What it costs at Australian stores today
| Store | Apple iPhone Duo |
|---|---|
| JB Hi-Fi | $3,499 256GB |
| The Good Guys | $3,498 256GB |
| Apple Store | $3,499 256GB |
| digiDirect | $3,497 256GB |
Right now the cheapest 256GB iPhone Duo we can find outright is $3,497, and 7 stores and telcos we check sell it. Discounts on a new iPhone in its first weeks are rare; when one appears, it will show here. Buying on a plan instead? Read phone outright vs plan first.
What you get
According to Apple's announcement, the Duo has:
- A 7.6-inch inner screen and a 5.4-inch outer screen, a wide "passport" shape rather than the tall, narrow shape of Samsung's earlier Folds.
- The A20 Pro chip, the same as the iPhone 18 Pro.
- Two 48MP rear cameras (main and ultra wide), but no separate telephoto camera like the Pro models have.
- Touch ID in the side button instead of Face ID, and a front camera hidden under the inner screen.
- eSIM only, like the iPhone Air. There's no SIM tray.
- A titanium frame and IP68 water resistance.
Apple says Apple Pencil support is coming later. Until it does, we wouldn't buy the Duo expecting an iPad replacement.
The case for buying it
- It's an iPhone that opens into a small iPad. If you read, edit documents or watch video on your phone, the bigger screen genuinely changes how you use it. iPad-style apps and iMessage, AirDrop and your Apple Watch all just work.
- It's built like a Pro iPhone. The chip, the titanium frame and the water resistance mean you're not trading durability for the fold the way early foldables did.
- Resale. iPhones hold their value better than any Android phone, and early reports of Duo pre-orders reselling above RRP overseas suggest this one will too.
The case against (for now)
- The price. At $3,497 you could buy an iPhone 18 Pro Max ($2,249.98) and an iPad Air and still have change.
- The camera. No telephoto. If zoom matters to you, the Pro models and the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra are better cameras.
- Stock. Reports at launch said Apple's own delivery dates for new orders had slipped to January, and stock outside the US was expected to be limited. If you see a store with it in stock in the table above, that's worth knowing; if not, don't pay a reseller's mark-up.
- First generation. Apple's first versions of new product types (the first Apple Watch, the first iPad Pro with a new design) have often been followed by a much better second version. We'd expect the same here.
What we'd buy instead
If you want a foldable today and don't mind Android, the Galaxy Z Fold8 is the same passport shape for less:

We go through the differences in iPhone Duo vs Galaxy Z Fold8. If you want an iPhone and don't need the fold, which iPhone should I buy? shows today's prices for every model.
Our verdict
- Buy it if you're deep in Apple's world, you'd use the big screen every day, and you can find it in stock at RRP.
- Wait if you want the Pencil, a telephoto camera, or a lower price. A second generation and the first proper discounts are both likely to be worth waiting for.
- Get a Galaxy Z Fold8 if you want a foldable now and don't mind leaving iOS.
