A good Bluetooth speaker gets taken everywhere: the beach, the backyard, the shower, a camping trip. That's why toughness, battery life and water resistance matter as much as sound. Here are the most popular portable speakers in Australia, with today's prices.

The most compared portable speakers

By size

Small (fits in a bag): speakers like the JBL Go and Flip, the Bose SoundLink Micro and the UE Wonderboom are for personal listening, the shower and travel. Expect decent volume but limited bass.

Medium: the Sony ULT Field 3 and 5, UE Boom and JBL Charge fill a backyard and usually last a full day on a charge.

Large and party speakers: the JBL Xtreme and Boombox, and party speakers with lights and handles, for gatherings and outdoor events.

What to check

  • Water and dust resistance. An IP67 rating means dust-tight and waterproof to about a metre for 30 minutes, which covers the beach and the pool. IPX4 only means splash-proof.
  • Battery life at real volume, not the maximum claim.
  • Pairing two speakers. Many brands let you link two of the same brand for stereo or more volume, but rarely across brands.
  • Charging port. USB-C is standard now; some speakers can also charge your phone.

Smart speakers

For a speaker that stays home and responds to your voice, see the smart speakers on our speakers page, including Sonos, Apple HomePod and Google and Amazon models.

Where to buy

Speakers are sold by nearly every big electronics store, and the cheapest one changes often. See the live store comparison in JB Hi-Fi vs Harvey Norman vs The Good Guys, and every speaker is on the speakers page.

How we work: every price in this guide is today's lowest in-stock price across the Australian stores we check, refreshed every morning, and the tables recalculate with it. Nobody pays to be included or to rank higher. Specs come from the stores' and makers' own listings. How Compare Empire works
