Australians take coffee seriously, and the machine you need depends less on budget than on how hands-on you want to be. Prices below update every morning from The Good Guys, JB Hi-Fi, Betta, Costco and the brands' own stores.

Which type of machine?

Type Good for Trade-off
Pod / capsule One button, no mess, consistent cups Pods cost far more per cup than beans
Manual espresso The best coffee for the money, café-style milk You grind, tamp and steam yourself
Fully automatic Fresh beans at a button, often milk too Dearer to buy, harder to fine-tune
Drip / filter Big batches of black coffee No espresso or frothed milk

What actually matters

  • A built-in grinder. Fresh-ground beans make the biggest difference to taste. A machine without one needs a decent separate grinder, which adds to the real price.
  • Milk. A steam wand gives the best texture once you learn it; automatic milk systems are easier but need cleaning after each use.
  • The colour code. The same machine has a different model code per colour, and stores discount colours differently. Check each colour's price on the machine's page.
  • Running costs. Beans cost a fraction of pods per cup. Add filters, descaler and cleaning tablets either way.
