RAM is the easiest PC part to overpay for. Memory prices have climbed sharply since late 2025, as chipmakers moved production to memory for AI servers, so the same kit can cost very different amounts at two Australian stores on the same day. Here is what to buy, and where it's cheapest this morning.

The short answer

  • New gaming PC (AMD AM5 or Intel 12th gen and later on a DDR5 board): 32GB of DDR5 as two 16GB sticks, at 6000 MT/s.
  • Upgrading an older DDR4 PC: 32GB of DDR4 as two 16GB sticks, at 3200 or 3600 MT/s. Check which speed your board supports first.
  • Tight budget: 16GB (2×8GB) still runs most games, but 32GB is the comfortable amount for new releases with Discord and a browser open.

Always buy a kit of two matched sticks rather than one: two sticks run in dual channel, which games notice.

32GB DDR5 kits (the default for a new build)

Cheapest two-stick 32GB DDR5-6000 kits sold by at least two Australian stores today:

6000 MT/s is the sweet spot for AMD's Ryzen 7000 and 9000 chips. Faster kits cost more and gain little in games; slower 4800 or 5200 MT/s kits are fine if the price gap is big. Lower CAS latency (CL30 or CL36 against CL40) is a small bonus, not worth a large premium.

32GB DDR4 kits (for upgrades)

DDR4 and DDR5 don't fit each other's slots. If you're upgrading, match what's already in your board: the type is printed on the sticks' label and in your motherboard's manual.

16GB kits on a budget

The cheapest of each speed

The lowest in-stock price for each speed we see at two or more stores:

Before you buy

  • Turn on XMP or EXPO in the BIOS after installing, or the kit runs at a slow default speed.
  • Laptop RAM is different: a laptop takes SO-DIMM sticks, which are smaller. Check the listing says SO-DIMM.
  • Check the price history before paying more than the cheapest store: our price history guide shows how.

Building from scratch? Our gaming PC build guide prices a whole parts list, and the CPU guide picks the processor.

How we work: every price in this guide is today's lowest in-stock price across the Australian stores we check, refreshed every morning, and the tables recalculate with it. Nobody pays to be included or to rank higher. Specs come from the stores' and makers' own listings. How Compare Empire works
