Robot vacuums have changed a lot. The best ones now map your home, avoid cords and pet mess, mop as well as vacuum, and return to a dock that empties their bin and washes their mop, so you touch them once every few weeks. That dock is also where most of the price goes.

What you're paying for

Price What you typically get
Under $500 Vacuuming with basic navigation; some mop. You empty the bin by hand.
$500–$1,000 Laser (LiDAR) mapping, app control with no-go zones, often an auto-empty dock.
$1,000–$2,000 Vacuum and mop with a dock that empties, washes and dries the mop, plus obstacle avoidance.
Over $2,000 The best obstacle avoidance and mopping, mops that lift on carpet, arms that reach into corners.

What actually matters

  • Navigation: LiDAR (a spinning laser on top) maps rooms accurately and works in the dark. Camera-based obstacle avoidance helps with socks, cords and pet accidents.
  • The dock: auto-empty saves the most effort. Mop washing and drying matter if you'll mop often.
  • Carpet handling: if you have rugs, look for mops that lift or detach so carpets stay dry.
  • Height: measure under your couch and beds. Some robots are too tall to fit.
  • Running costs: bags, filters, brushes and mop pads. Check that spares are easy to buy in Australia.
  • App and privacy: robots with cameras map your home. Choose a brand with a clear privacy policy and keep the app updated.

Which brand?

Roborock, Dreame and Ecovacs lead on features at most price points. iRobot (Roomba) remains widely sold and well supported. Narwal specialises in mopping. Brand matters less than the specific model's dock and navigation: compare the features above.
