$1,000 buys a lot more TV than it did a few years ago. At this price you can get a 55-inch Mini LED or a 65-inch QLED from a major brand, both with 4K, HDR and a proper smart TV system. The list below only includes TVs under $1,000 today that at least three Australian stores sell, so the price is a real comparison, not one store's clearance.

The best TVs under $1,000 today

The order is by how many stores sell each one (a good sign of a mainstream, well-supported model), not by price. Every row links to the full store-by-store comparison and the price history.

Mini LED under $1,000

The best picture you can get at this price. Mini LED backlights dim in zones, so dark scenes look much better than on a basic LED TV, and they get bright enough for a sunny room.

65 inches under $1,000

If size matters more than picture quality, these are the biggest-brand 65-inch TVs under $1,000:

What you give up under $1,000

  • Contrast: most cheaper TVs use VA or IPS LCD panels without many dimming zones. Fine in a lit room, weaker for movies at night.
  • Gaming features: many budget TVs are 60Hz. If you have a PS5 or Xbox Series X and want 120Hz, check the spec sheet for HDMI 2.1.
  • Sound: thin TVs have thin sound. A budget soundbar makes a bigger difference than most picture upgrades.
  • Processing: cheaper TVs upscale low-quality broadcasts less cleanly. Free-to-air TV in Australia is still mostly broadcast below 4K.

Brands to know at this price

TCL and Hisense dominate the under-$1,000 market in Australia, with Samsung and LG's entry models alongside them and store brands like FFalcon and Blaupunkt at the very bottom. The big-brand models usually get software updates for longer.
