What actually matters
- Front or top load. Front loaders use less water and power and are gentler on clothes; top loaders are faster and easier on the back.
- Capacity. 7.5–8kg suits most couples, 9–10kg a family; 12kg and up washes doonas at home.
- Heat pump or vented dryer. Heat pump dryers cost more to buy and far less to run. If you dry most loads, they pay for themselves.
- Stacking. Most front loaders stack with a dryer using a kit sold separately; check the model's kit before you buy.
