Which DJI drone is for you?
- DJI Neo: a tiny, palm-launched drone that follows you and films short clips. Fun, cheap, and controllable from your phone. Not built for wind or long flights.
- DJI Flip: a foldable, beginner-friendly drone with guards around the propellers and a better camera than the Neo.
- DJI Mini series: the most popular choice for travel and holiday footage. Small, light, with a camera good enough for most people. The "Pro" models add better sensors and obstacle sensing.
- DJI Air series: bigger sensors, more stable in wind, and longer zoom. For people serious about aerial photography.
- DJI Avata: first-person-view (FPV) flying with goggles. A different, more immersive experience.
Fly More Combo or standard?
A Fly More Combo usually adds two extra batteries, a charging hub and a bag. A single battery gives you a real-world flight of well under the advertised maximum, so for most people the combo is worth it. Check which controller is included: models with a screen (like the DJI RC 2) are easier than using your phone.
Why 250 grams matters
Drones under 250g (most Mini models and smaller) face fewer restrictions in many countries, and in Australia sub-250g drones flown for fun are treated more lightly than heavier ones. Rules change, so check the Civil Aviation Safety Authority's current requirements, especially if you'll fly for work or for money, where registration and accreditation apply.
The basic safety rules
CASA's drone safety rules for recreational flying include:
- don't fly higher than 120 metres above the ground;
- keep at least 30 metres away from other people;
- don't fly over or above people, or crowds, beaches and sports events;
- keep your drone within your visual line of sight;
- don't fly near airports, helicopter landing sites or emergency operations;
- respect people's privacy.
CASA's "Know Your Drone" site and the apps it lists show where you can and can't fly.
Where to buy
DJI drones are sold by JB Hi-Fi, Harvey Norman, The Good Guys, digiDirect and DJI's own store. See where to buy a camera or drone for who's cheapest most often, and every model is on the drones page.
